Plate 19 from from Shakers & Kirtland by Louis Baus showing a west view of the Center Family meeting house along Lee Road.
Baus description: "The meeting house, or church, stood on the east side of Lee Rd., a few hundred feet north of the present Shaker Blvd., and South of the office; the boys home and elders’ work shop in between. It was 50 ft. wide and a hundred ft. long; The long side facing Lee Rd. It was dedicated Nov. 29, 1849, and replaced the first meeting house, 30 x 45 ft. that was built in 1826. The new building was divided into three parts. At the south end were rising seats for the general public,, fenced off by a railing, occupying 20 ft. of floor room.
At the north end 24 ft. of floor space was cut off for the use of the ministry. On the first floor were two appartments [sic], seperated [sic] by a hallway 10 ft. wide. Each appartment [sic] has a doorway to the hall, the audiance [sic] room and the exit. The men occupied one appartment [sic], the women the other. Above them were two rooms, one for the elders, the other for the eldresses. This left a space of 55 ft. for the worshipers. At both ends were double doors, the north doors for the members, (photo. no. 20.) and south doors for the public. A door seldom used was also on the west side (toward Lee Rd.). Top photo. [Plate 19] shows the west side facing Lee Rd., the lower [Plate 20], the n.w. side showing the double door to the hallway and the door on either side of this leading to the two lower appartments [sic] of the ministry."Photograph Details
