Lee Road, 1890s, Moreland Neighborhood, Schools, Warrensville Township, Black HistoryDescription
Photograph mounted to board of Hornet's Nest School students and at least one teacher identified on verso as Mary Litzel. A smaller photograph of the Hornet's Nest School in the winter is glued to the top of the board. The class includes four Black children, very likely four of the Johnson children who lived next door in a rented house on the Dempcy property. The photograph was also most likely taken around 1894-95, not 1893, when four of the Johnson children were of school age.
Photograph is loose but was originally glued to scrapbook page P-659 from unknown Warrensville Township scrapbook. The back of the page was assigned a separate accession number (P-660) and features two additional black-and-white photographs.Photograph Details

The Johnson family—including Delvin Sr., his wife Emma, and their 10 children—was one of the first Black families in Warrensville Township. They moved from Virginia in 1887 and rented a house on the Dempcy property at the northwest corner of Lee and Kinsman Roads. In 1903, they purchased a house in Cleveland and move away from Warrensville Township.Acquisition
