Scope and Content

Board and committee records are those records created by the Shaker Historical Society boards and its committees (subcommittees and ad hoc committees) during the course of conducted business and activities. These records include correspondence, policies, reports, meeting minutes, legal documents, newsletters, board and member rosters, and presentations.

Context

The Board and its committees are the earliest and longest serving governing body of the Shaker Historical Society, electing William Slade, Jr. as its first president in 1947. Since the beginning, the board has taken responsibility for the finances, strategic planning, legal concerns, and oversight of the historical society. Expectations of board members has included: active membership and participation in fundraising; outreach and advocacy in the community; and generous financial support of the historical society. Throughout the historical society’s operation, the board has responded to the call for fundraising, collaboration, research, and growth through the creation of ad hoc committees dedicated to these issues.
