Unnumbered plate from from Shakers & Kirtland by Louis Baus showing a southwest view of the stone gristmill in Doan Brook Gorge. [Plate] "711" is penciled in margin next to photo. Photo is identical to Plate 52 but has a different caption and description. Description incorrectly identifies photo as southeast view.
Baus description: "In 1843 the solid stone mill was built at Doan Brook by the Shakers, who occupied the section east of Cleveland and now a part of the present Shaker Heights. It stood in the ravine near the stone quarry several hundred yards west of the lower lake at Coventry Rd. After the decline of the Shakers the mill was sold to Chas. Reader, who on July 4, 1886 blew up the old mill. The view shows the southeast sides and Elder Prescott in the long coat."Photograph Details
