Plate M from from Shakers & Kirtland by Louis Baus showing four views from the tower of the Mormon Kirtland Temple in Kirtland, Ohio. View #1 is a southwest view showing many buildings and farmland. View #2 is a southwest view showing a field with bales of hay. View #3 is a west view showing several buildings among trees. View #4 is a north view showing the historic Kirtland North Cemetery in the foreground and many buildings and trees in the background.
Baus description: "The inspiring sights that meet the gaze from the tower of the temple are not soon forgotten, and at times many paintings and photographs have been made from this point. In the ‘50s [1850s] when the first crude cameras were introduced, James F. Ryder, one of the first pioneer photographers traveling in this section made use of the tower as a studio for a few days. Times have changed the general appearance in the vicinity; many new homes have been erected and other roads built. View at lower right [View #4] shows the cemetery just north of the temple."Photograph Details
