1800s, Immigrants, Isle of Man, Warrensville Township, Mercer NeighborhoodDescription
Metal dovetail saw with wooden handle. ASKHAM maker's mark above the saw with a "Warranted Superior" medallion with the coat of arms of the United Kingdom. This saw was made by John Askham, a manufacturer and merchant of cutlery, knives, saws, and razors from Sheffield, England who sold goods in both the United States and England in the 19th century. The medallion design indicates it was made in England.
The saw was owned by Robert Corlett (1799-1861), one of the early immigrants from the Isle of Man to settle in Warrensville Township. Many Corletts followed and cleared the land for farming and to build houses. Robert is buried in Warrensville West Cemetery with his wife Elizabeth and son William. The house he built c.1844 still stands at 21710 Fairmount Boulevard as one of the oldest homes in Shaker Heights.Collection
