Plate 29 from from Shakers & Kirtland by Louis Baus showing a southwest view of the Center Family's woolen mill near Lee Road and South Park Boulevard.
Baus description: "In 1854 a woolen factory was erected of brick. This was 24 x 50 ft., three stories high on the south and four on the north side, including a basement. It stood of the east side of Lee Rd. at the knoll between N. Park and S. Park Blvd., and a little west of the grave of Jacob Russell on the present boulevard. The upper story contained a spinning jack of [150?] spindles, two power looms for weaving cloth and a twister.
The next story below was used for the carding machines, most of their wool being made into stocking yarn. Below this was an iron lathe for turning broom handles, and in the basement was a large grindstone, and a buzz saw for sawing wood for fuel. The entire machinery was carried by water power supplied by an overshot wheel, with water drawn from the upper pond. The building was destroyed in the late ‘90s to make way for the boulevard system."Photograph Details
