Plate C from from Shakers & Kirtland by Louis Baus showing a north view of the former home of Joseph Smith, founder of Mormonism and the Latter Day Saint movement, in Kirtland, Ohio. A horse-drawn carriage stands in the road while a group of women and children line up in front of the house. The sign above the porch reads "Kirtland Post Office."
Baus description: "Looking north down the main road; the old home of Joseph Smith the Prophet appear on the right. In the upper part of this building Joseph jr. was born; who became President of the Church from 1860 to 1914. After the murder of the Prophet in 1844, for a while all was confusion, different men rose up as leaders, and Brigham Young, a member of the twelve, led a faction across the plains and set up a colony on the shores of the Great Salt Lake. Here he introduced polygamy against the doctrines of the church. A large part of the Saints refused to go with Brigham Young, and settled down in small groups in Iowa and Illinois. In 1852 these Saints reorganized their church, and under the leadership of the slain prophets son went steadily ahead with their gospel. Frederick M. Smith the third in direct line, has since 1814 been the head of the church with headquarters at Independence, Mo. They do not recognize the church of Young."Photograph Details
