Warrensville Township, 19th Century, 1890s, Businesses, Shaker Heights, Mercer NeighborhoodDescription
Unnumbered plate from Shakers & Kirtland by Louis Baus showing a southwest view of George Mighton's feed mill, sawmill, and cider mill on the east side of Warrensville Center Road north of the Warrensville Methodist Episcopal Church.
Handwritten note in the page margin indicates that the donor retained plates 708 and 709. As a result, this unnumbered plate and plate 082.1931 Bau.709 were assigned numbers 708 and 709. The page that originally held plates 708 and 709 likely contained the descriptions for 082.1931 Bau.708 and 082.1931 Bau.709, which explains why the description below does not correspond to this plate.
Baus description: "In the latter ‘80s the A.J. Beyerly’s brick yard was converted into a park. The creek was damed [sic] and the pond made, while several buildings were erected and bridges built over the ravine. In 1892 the name was changed to Forest City Park, and after changing management a few times it became the west section of Washington Park. It was reached by a branch of Willson Ave. car, which ran down Independence Rd. to th entrance on Sykora St. Near the entrance stood the ball park where at times the Cleveland Ball Club played their Sunday games. Various amusements attracted great crowds on Sundays, such as Steve Brodie, high diver; Muldoon and T. Jenkins the champion wrestlers; Dunken Ross, swordsman and many others."Photograph Details
