Wooden Shaker seed box, painted and labeled “Shaker Seeds; Genuine Garden”. Partitioned in six spaces across.

Context

The growing and selling of vegetable seeds was one of the important Shaker industries. Much of the area behind the Shaker Historical Society was devoted to the growing of vegetables for this purpose. The Shakers were the first to package seeds for sale in small envelopes, such as those included with the seed box.
