Plate B from from Shakers & Kirtland by Louis Baus showing the Kirtland Temple, a Mormon church, in Kirtland, Ohio.
Baus description: "Early in 1831 Joseph Smith and fifty families arrived at Kirtland, O., and amid bitter opposition built a city. The temple was under construction in 1833, women as well as the men shared in the labor, and on March 27, 1836 the temple was dedicated. The structure of hewn native stone is plastered both without and within, measuring 59 x 79 ft. and walls running 60 ft. in height. The tower is a 120 ft. The cost about $60,000. Is three stories high, the first and second stories being auditoriums of equal size and arrangement. The third story consists of five class rooms.
About 1838 because of persecution and internal trouble, most of the members moved to Missouri and Illinois. Services continued for a time until the ‘40s when the temple was abandoned, and fell into disuse, except for community affairs conducted by strangers. After more than thirty years, returning members began to occupy it, and the church acquired legal title and possession in 1880. At present it is used mainly by the local congregation of over 300 members.
Each summer it is the place of gathering for Saints throughout Ohio and adjoining states for a ten-day reunion. Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the legal continuation and successor to the church that built it."Photograph Details
