Scope and Content

Women’s Committee records include correspondence, meeting minutes, policies, Women’s Committee rosters, and ephemera related to social events, educational programs, and fundraising activities conducted by the women’s committee.

Context

The Women’s Committee was formed June 1971 with the following goals: (1) to stimulate interest in The Shaker Historical Society; (2) to raise money to help maintain and operate the Museum-Library; and (3) to supply volunteers to staff the Museum-Library. The women of the committee were untiring in their work helping to support the financial responsibilities, collections, and goals of the historical society through their annual Sales on the Grounds fundraiser, their commitment to volunteer work for the historical society, including operation of the Spirit Tree gin shop, and through their acquisition of many Shaker artifacts for the museum. Early projects completed by the Women’s Committee included renovating the second floor of the museum which, until that time, had gone unused. From 1971-2001, the Women’s Committee functioned as an adjacent organization to the historical society, having its own bylaws, policies, committees, and budget. In 2001, the committee unanimously voted to disband and transferred their remaining holdings to the historical society in accordance with their bylaws.
