Plate 44 from from Shakers & Kirtland by Louis Baus showing a southeast view of the East Family house near present-day Fontenay Road.
Baus description: "North from Woodland on the present Fontaney [Fontenay] Rd. is a small circle of trees. These are those that stood in front of the East Family house. This was of the same size and design of the Center Family. It had a membership of fifty when at its height, about 1840. The number was only twenty five in 1879, and shortly these were placed in the other families and the buildings abandoned.
This family was originally the Gathering Order, which consisted of four elders, two of each sex. Here all were directed to go who desired to join the community.
Many called in the fall, and would withdraw with the coming of spring. These were called ‘Winter Shakers.’
At first all children of the colony were cared for in this home. The principal resources of this family were the manufacture and sale of brooms, and the selling of milk at the door. Top photo. show the dwelling when still occupied by the Shakers. Washhouse on the left and workshop between. Lower photo. shows the neglect and decay after being left to its fate."Photograph Details
