Scope and Content

Director/curator and staff records are those records created during the course of business. Records include correspondence, presentations, records of held collections, and reports.

Context

The Office of Curator/Director is widely accepted to have begun with Mrs. Herman J. (Elizabeth) Nord. Acting as corresponding secretary from 1947-1969, Elizabeth Nord also served as the museum’s first curator, overseeing a committee of thirty members in the maintenance and display of collections. From 1947-1971, Mrs. Nord was dedicated to the collections of the museum, research on Shaker history, and the activities and successes of the historical society. Over the years, the office of curator (often interchangeable with the office of director) continued to serve as caretaker for the museum and its artifacts and as a representative and “good will ambassador” of the Shaker Historical Society, reporting to the oversight of the Board of Trustees. Throughout the course of its operations, staff size and composition has varied. Common additional staff roles and responsibilities have included librarian, public relations and outreach, and education.
