Wednesday Evening - August 25, 1943
Dear Folks,
We have mail call twice a day now. This noon I had three letters - one from Cpl. Planalp at Drew Field, and two from you, Mom. Yours were nice and thick - like I like to get. Jack says he's a cadreman now, but will probably leave in a month or so for the STAR Unit at Charleston, South Carolina. He really likes it there at Drew Field now. There is a Spanish town nearby, and he goes in quite a bit to dances, church, and other affairs. He's become acquainted with some Spanish girls, and has had some dates with them. Surprisingly enough, he says he's found some of the girls who aren't Catholic.
I was interested in "Under the Stars and Stripes." I thought Jack Sewell was at Georgetown University, but I guess that was just his STAR Unit. He's very lucky to be going to the College of the City of New York. At least that's what I'd think after being stationed here at Loyola. I wonder if he got in languages or engineering. If you're put in the advanced course (Term IV) in Engineering you are promoted to Pfc. rank. I know he's not in that.
Father Connoly - he's the Registrar here - called me into his office the other day to see how I was coming along in Basic II. I'd asked him about switching over when I first came here, but he said adjustments would be made later. I told him how badly I was doing, but he said we'd wait two more weeks before being switched to Basic I. I've had most of the stuff they're covering now in Basic I, so it wouldn't hurt me to miss out on the first part.
I had a letter from Duane the other day. I'm gong to try to see him this coming Sunday, although I'm not sure whether it's this weekend or the one after that he has open post. His first weekend off he has a date lined up with a gal in L.A. whom Laura Lee knew at school.
I also had a letter from Barbara. She goes into Nurses' Training at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis October 27th. Up until then, though, she's working at Quaker Oats.
Will you please send me those last negatives I sent you - several of the boys want to get some of the prints made.
It's 7:15 now. We go to the study at 7:30. Tonight at 9:00 we're having some kind of show here.
Love, BobCollection
