Description

Chaim Soutine 1893-1943 is the story of the artist's life beginning in a small East European Jewish community as the 10th of 11 children, constantly ridiculed and punished by his father and brothers and others because he wanted to draw and sketch. When he reached an age where he was able to leave home, he was able to continue with his sketching and drawing and painting. Many of his early works were moody and sadistic because of the homelife he had known. Later on he enjoyed painting portraits and landscapes. This is the first comprehensive exhibition of Soutine in the United States since 1950. 152/Softbound/Illustrated/Photographs
