Hughes, Bela M., Succeeded Wm. Russell as President, Pony Express, Photos (3), 1840-1880. b/w. Three photos of Hughes over his life time as listed below. Bela Hughes, born in Kentucky was son of Andrew S. Hughes, Indian Agent at Agency, MO. He was cousin to Ben Holladay the Stage Coach King who also bought the flagging Pony Express in 1861 and put Bela in charge. Bela served in the Missouri militia during the Black Hawk Wars, and kept the title of General throughput his life. He was previously a land agent at the Plattsburg Land Office. Later he became partner in Silas Woodson's law firm in St. Joseph and served in the Missouri State Senate. He was cashier of Milton Tootle's Western Bank. He left in 1862 for Colorado to manage Holladay's Overland Mail Stage. 92.1H.41 = Hughes as young man, from painting by Nichols in the R.W. Stanley Collection.
