Scope and Content

Historical Society Given Jeff Thompson's Saber, St. Joseph Gazette, August 10, 1954. There is a picture of Roy Coy, curator of the St. Joseph Museum inspecting the saber of M. Jeff Thompson, Missouri state guard officer, which was accepted by the St. Joseph Historical Society. Bartlett Boder, president of the historical group looks on. General Thompson, a former mayor of St. Joseph, wore the saber during his service for the Confederacy in the Civil War. The saber is inscribed "Col M. Jeff Thompson, Missouri State Guard." Thompson carried the saber through the war. He was known in the war as "Swamp Fox." In addition to the saber, two epaulets also worn by Thompson and a photograph of him were donated to the society. The picture was one sent to his sister Betty, from the prison at Fort Delaware. The Thompson items were left to the society by verbal will of the late Charles A. Bailey, grandson of Thompson. They were delivered here by Lewis B. Boyd of New York city, and James Boyd II of West Hartford, Conn., stepsons of Mr. Bailey.
