Wednesday Evening - August 18, 1943
Dear Folks,
Frank Hanlin and I are lying here on my bunk writing. He borrowed two USO postcards from me. We finished evening chow a while ago, and went to his locker - on the second floor - where we ate some of the delicious fudge and divinity his aunt sent him. We've also been feasting the last few days on cookies - a large box of 'em - his mother sent him, and on some peanuts which mother sent together with his looseleaf notebook. They're really delicious, and I wish you'd send me some more. I enjoyed those you sent to Pasadena. I guess Kathleen's going to send me some fudge or cookies soon, according to her letters.
By the way, I had a letter today from Warren. He's leaving Diego for Mare Island at San Francisco. - From there he doesn't know where or when he'll go. I must write him soon and send him those photographs we took in San Diego and LaJolla. Maybe I'll write him tonight, but I've got to get some Analytics, and should study my history and geography. He was telling me about his visit to L.A. the weekend before last - he has some relatives or friends there.
I think maybe I'll go visit Duane this Sunday. Frank Hanlin is either going to visit some people he knows in San Pedro, or a friend of his who's been at Santa Ava for some time is coming over to see him here. Ray Frantz may want to go into L.A. to the Philharmonic Auditorium again to see "Cavalleria Rusticana" and "Pagliacci." So I may end up doing that. We can always get delicious free meals at the Hollywood Guild Canteen, and beds for Saturday night if we put in our reservation early enough. One of these weekends I'll have to go see the Wenz's at Santa Monica. I may take another guy along, too, since Leanna wrote me that letter and said to bring a friend along, too, if I wanted to.
You certainly made a bunch of cookies, Mom. And I'll bet they're much tastier than the ones we get free in Hollywood at the Hollywood USO and Canteen. We can have coffee, punch, cookies, sandwiches, cigarettes, etc., free at the various canteen and servicemen's places there.
The Hollywood premiere of "For Whom the Bell Tolls" was Monday evening at the Carthay Circle Theatre. I'd love to have seen it.
Oh yes, I might go to the Hollywood Bowl this coming Saturday night. Artur Rubinstein, pianist is guest artist. Last Saturday night Frank Sinatra, popular crooner of ballads (popular), sang there before a crowd of 12 or 15 thousand.
Rev Kerstetter was up camping in the mountains last Sunday, and won't be back till the second Sunday in September. But I saw some former St. Joseph people there - a Mrs. Parker and her son, Bob, who asked Hanlin and me to lunch afterwards (we turned 'em down, but let 'em drive us downtown), and a Mrs. Hillix.
I thot maybe I'd have another letter from you today. - The last one came on Monday.
Love and Kisses, Bob
P.S. - I've enclosed 6 of the 7 snapshots I took at Callan. The 7th, of me, I sent to Kathleen. But you have the negative, if you want it developed.
[Note: writing on the left side of page 1] I enjoyed the clippings of Mariella's postcard - I'll have to write her.Collection
