Journal of an Exploring Tour Beyond the Rocky Mountains under the direction of the A.B.C.F.M. containing a Description of the Geography, Geology, Climate, Productions of the Country, and the Numbers, Manners, and Customs of the Natives: with a Map of Oregon Territory. (ABCFM is American Board of Commissioners of Foreign Missions).
Rev. Samuel Parker and Dr. Marcus Whitman, missionaries, joined a fur trading party in Spring, 1845 trip to their rendezvous in Wyoming. While Whitman returned east, Parker went on accompanied by the Nez Perce to their home in Idaho, and then down the Columbia to Fort Vancouver. Parker's purpose was to be selecting sites for mission work among the Native Americans. He sent letters to the next year's rendezvous to Dr. Whitman, but he himself returned back to the United States by sea. This book describes his trip, the country over which he traveled, the Indians he met, and updates a map of the Oregon Territory. Information in the book comes from his personal observations and information gleaned from fur traders he met on the trip.
