Northwest Missouri Genealogical Society Journal, October, 2003 Contains transcriptions of various public lists from county records, newspaper accounts, and personal genealogical research connected with the Northwest Missouri Region. Of special interest in this issue Civl War: Organization of Militia, Buchanan County, 1864: In response to bushwacker activity in adjoining Platte County, the Provost Marshal at St. Joseph issued an order for all businesses to close and the people of the county to assemble for the purpose of organizing a local militia for defense of the town against possible similar action in Buchanan County. The militia was pursuant to Order No. 107 by General Rosecrans. A list of the names of those enrolled in the military that day are given. From the St. Joseph Morning Herald, July 10, 1864. St. Joseph Steam Printing Company (1871-1892). A description of this nationally known printing company. Their products included the histories of the counties in Northwest Missouri: Atchison, Bates, Buchanan, Holt, as well as St. Joseph City Directories 1971, 1874-1883. The January 1, 1877 news account about the company from the St. Joseph Gazette is reprinted. This article includes the names of the staff and stockholders of the company. A graphic of the printing building on NW corner of market square is included. Home of the Friendless, Buchanan County, 1879, from unknown source. This is news account of a home created in 1864 by a civic organization to care for homeless men, women and children. By 1869, the home had aided 569 people. Local Doctors volunteered their services and citizens subscribed at an average rate of 50 cents/month for the $60.00 upkeep of the home. Names of the doctors are listed. Civil War Memoirs of David Francis Bone. Written as a letter to his daughter in 1932, Bone recalls his joining the Mo State Militia under Sterling Price and later the Confederate Army. Hence, his mother, a widow, had her Kansas farm stripped of livestock and grain by Gen. Montgomery and Jim Lane. She was forced to sell her farm for a span of horses and wagon to get her family out and to relatives in Chillicothe, MO. Bone returned home to Mo after the war, and was not well received because of his Confederate connection. Sick and weakened with "Army Complaint", he had to walk from Chillicothe to Utica, crossing the Grand River Bridge on his hands and knees. Later he would become a Methodist Circuit Rider covering Carroll, Ray, and Livingston counties, of which he gives an interesting account.
