Description

History of the Expedition under the command of Lewis and Clark was formerly 4 volumes, but is now 3 volumes. Vol. 1 begins with the history of the expedition: Up the Missouri to the Platte, to the Vermilion, to the Teton River, to life with the Mandans for a period of time, and on to the Yellowstone and beyond. The set contains original manuscript journals and field notebooks of the explorers as summarized by Nocolas Biddle in the original 4-volume set and now condensed into a 3-volume set footnoted by Elliot Coues. The books tell of encounters with dozens of Indian tribes, descriptions of their political and social organization, dress, living habits and ways; personal anecdotes of courage and stamina; and vivid descriptions of staggering natural wonders that no white man had ever seen. 1964 reprint of original 1893 publication. 352/Softbound/Map
