History of the Expedition under the command of Lewis and Clark, Vol. 2Description
History of the Expedition under the command of Lewis and Clark was formerly 4 volumes, but is now 3 volumes. Vol. 2 starts at Maria's River, goes on to the Great Falls, the Missouri River, on to the Rocky Mountains, across the Great Divide, life with the Shoshones, and on down the Snake and Columbia Rivers to the Pacific Ocean. Establishing Fort Clatsop and life with the Indians of the area concludes this volume. Starts with page 353.
The set contains original manuscript journals and field notebooks of the explorers as summarized by Nocolas Biddle in the original 4-volume set and now condensed into a 3-volume set by Elliot Coues. The books tell of encounters with dozens of Indian tribes, descriptions of their political and social organization, dress, living habits and ways; personal anecdotes of courage and stamina; and vivid descriptions of staggering natural wonders that no white man had ever seen.
