Semirefined, riding in open horse-drawn buggy in celebration parade. 96.1P.37 = Postmaster Summerville and Chief Thunderface (Mark Jones), who is in Native American dress with full headdress. Handwritten on back: "Here is Postmaster General Summerfield negotiating with Mark Jones, the Elder, wearing a war bonnet of the Paiute Indian tribe. Mark Jones was 90 years old in this picture and died May 27, 1961. Buried in Nixon, Nevada. The negotiations were to arrange the safe passage of the Pony Express riders through the Paiute lands in Nevada!" 96.1P.38 = Pony Express (re-run) Rider galloping away from crowd on street in Sacramento. Handwritten on back: "Mr. Waddell T. Smith, grandson of one of the founders of the Pony Express re-enacting the start of the eastward run from Sacramento, Calif. to St. Joseph, Mo.
