Civil War Letter: Parker, Benjamin Letter about New Orleans Fire to his Sister, 1864. He mentions a large fire uptown, He expects to go to Florida next week with prisoners,. He states that small pox is raging and many children have died. General Banks the first day fight rebs drove the Union army back 9 miles. They captured 27 pieces of artillery and a large number of army wagons. They have over 1,000 wounded.
He mentions that the army hasn't much confidence in General Gegle. The rebs have turned water off so their gunboats were aground. The rebel General Joel Johnson is threatening the rear of Baton Rouge and Port Hudson and the Red river is a bad place Dated May 4, 1864.
