Context

October 9, 1943 Dear Folks, Well, I guess I don't need to tell you the place from which I'm writing this. It should be perfectly obvious. I've been here since about 4:30 this afternoon, and it's 6:10 now. I've been waiting for R. C. Haglund to show up between 5 and 5:30, or thereabouts. I wrote a card to him at Camp Haan last Thursday morning, telling him to meet me here this afternoon. He and Hanlin spent last weekend in Hollywood. Hanlin had reserved two beds at the Guild Canteen, so they had a place to stay Saturday night. Haglund had Hanlin reserve a bed there for him this weekend, so I also called the Guild last Wednesday and reserved a bed for myself. It looks as if Haglund isn't getting in this weekend. He told Hanlin he might not because he might pull some duty, such as guard or KP. Then, too, my card might not have reached him in time. Also, it takes the bus fairly long to get into L.A. from Haan, so he may still show up. I came up (hitch-hiking) into Hollywood this afternoon with Bill Cribben. He shopped around in Inglewood a bit first, buying his ticket home to Chicago at the Santa Fe office there. - That's where we have to get them. I've been wondering when my money order will arrive. The News-Press and tennis racket came today - thanks for going to all the trouble. Dog gone it - our tennis tournament was called off because the only time we could play was from 6-7:30 in the evening - and it's getting too dark now to play then. I haven't had a letter from you folks all week. Did I tell you I had a card from Duane at 29 Palms? I've looked it up on a map in an atlas, and it's something over 100 miles straight east of L.A. Maybe we can get together some weekend. - I wrote him a letter the other night. Who should I bump into this afternoon at the Hollywood USO but Phil Eveloff!!! He and a coupla other guys were going out the door when I spied him. Naturally, he was as surprised to see me as I was to see him. He's at Camp Roberts now, studying radio, I believe he said. Here I'm starting a second sheet, with nothing much to say. But I'll try to scrape up something. When I finish this letter, I'll hop up and have some coffee, cake, and sandwiches at the refreshment bar here. Then I'll probably go someplace for a malt. I've got a notion to see "Arsenic and Old Lace," which has been playing a long time at a theater here. Servicemen can get free tickets to it at the USO. Or I might see a movie. Then I'll probably hitch hike out to the Guild Canteen, and find my bunk, and crawl in. I had a shower and a small swim at the Y.M.C.A. this afternoon. Bill Cribben just came back from "Thank Your Lucky Stars" - a movie he went to see. I guess we'll go someplace tonite, maybe the Canteen, or to Playtime Theater. We just had a snack at the bar. Um-m. Well, I'd better stop writing, because he's getting impatient. (Don't believe him) Bill says "Hello!" Love 'n Stuff, Gee, I can hardly wait to see you all on my furlough! Bob [Note: the (Don't believe him) is written in different hand writing and black ink...presumably Bill Cribben]
