Graves Funeral Home Record Book, 1928-1934. B.F. Graves Funeral Home, was a mortuary that served the black population of St. Joseph. Benjamin F. Graves was an employee of Fleeman-McNail funeral home in 1921. By 1925 he had joined Scales and opened Graves & Scales Funeral Home at 1408 N. 4th. In 1926, the business is listed in the City Directory as Graves Funeral Home at 1309 N. 4th. From at least 1930 to 1942, Graves Funeral Home is located at 806. S. 17th.
The Record of Funeral lists the deceased., place of death, place of funeral, date of burial, where interred, deceased age, race, occupation, marital status, birthplace, last residence, space name, parent's names and place of birth, physician, cause of death, services rendered, costs of services, payments made.
The succesor funeral home was probably Ramsey Funeral Home located at 1602 Messanie. Ramsey sold the business to Alexander Funeral Home in 1946 which operated the funeral home at 1602 Messanie, closing in 1979. Three Record of Funeral books were donated to the museum by Karen Alexander Kerford. The books had been in the Alexander family's possession.Lexicon
