Stewart, Robert, Missouri Governor from St. Joseph, Photos (2), c.1845 & 1860. b/w. Two photos of Robert Stewart at different times in his life. Portrait photos. #479 is young man with light hair, clean shaven. #480 shows Steward probably from time he was Governor just before Civil War. Painting with dark hair, clean shaven. Stewart was Missouri Governor 1857-1861. His principal achievement locally was getting the bonds from the State to build the Hannibal & St. Joseph Railroad. An eccentric man, stories are told of his propensity to pardon state prisoners, ride his horse into the Executive Mansion, call for a state day of fasting & prayer.
