Stewart was Missouri Governor 1857-1861. His principal achievement locally was getting the bonds from the State to build the Hannibal & St. Joseph Railroad. An eccentric man, stories are told of his propensity to pardon state prisoners, ride his horse into the Executive Mansion, call for a state day of fasting & prayer.
