Civil War Letter from Surgeon's Convalescent Camp, Vicksburg, VA, Dec. 29, 1863. Handwritten letter (4 pages, but not complete letter) from a soldier to his wife.
He is attached to the 18th Ohio. The Convalescent Camp was being closed. He was working with Dr. Edgar. He had expected his wife to come, but evidently she had decided not to, so he doesn't care where they send him. He is disappointed but if he re-enlists he can get a 30 day furlough and come home.
He went to a feast with Dr. Edgar to Dr. Chambers and met General McArthur. There were some older society ladies from Vicksburg at the feast, he gives by name, who suggest they had done something amiss at church on Christmas. Later he finds a notice from Gen. McPherson banishing these ladies from the army's midst for leaving the service when the prayer for the U.S. Senate & Congress was being given. The ladies were given 48 hours to leave the area or be arrested. Others were warned of insulting the President and the United States.Collection
