Description

The Civil War Reminiscences of General M. Jeff Thompson contains the original notes Jeff Thompson kept during his time as a soldier during the Civil War. The notes were kept by descendents. One copy was donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri while the original went to the Southern Historical Collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The authors worked together to obtain permission to write this book and publish the diary. Mr. Thompson lived and worked in St. Joseph for several years in the mid-1800's and held many positions of importance, including mayor. Thompson's best known act of civil disobedience in St. Joseph was his removal of the Stars & Stripes flying over the St. Joseph Post Office. The consequences of that event sent Thompson to the Confederate Army where he was in charge of troops in Missouri's Bootheel, whereby he earned the nickname "Swamp Fox" of the Civil War. After the War, Thompson did not return to St. Joseph until shortly before his death. He is buried in Mt. Mora Cemetery in St. Joseph. This book is from the library of Reid and Virginia Woodbury. 310/Hardbound/Illustrations/Maps.
