Howling Wolf and the History of Ledger Art. Ledger Art describes Plains Indian drawings and painting on paper from the 2nd half of the nineteenth century, made on ledger paper readily available from military outposts. Howling Wolf, a Southern Cheyenne, is the most important artist of this period with work from 1875-1878, when Indians confined to Fort Marion, FL and during the reservation years.
