Dreams to Dust: A Diary of the California Gold Dust, 1849-1850, The author, Charles Ross Parke was a Medical Doctor in Como, Whiteside County, Illinois in 1849. He and eight others formed the Como Pioneer Company and left for California on April 7, 1849. Parke's objective was "search of gold and sight-seeing." The company made its way overland from Illinois to St. Joseph, MO. Fearing cholera the group advanced north of St. Joseph to cross the river on the ferry at Fort Kearney. Parke returned in 1851 via the route through Nicaraga.
