Personal family scrapbook of Mary Leach Moss
Beginning with a photograph of the home, her father, Lewis Leach, built at 519 N. 8th St. in St. Joseph, MO, and containing newspaper references to marriages/deaths/and doings of many members of the Word/Leach/Allen families, both in St. Joseph, Salem, Mass, Kentucky, Montana, etc. Any one interested in the various branches of these three extended families could learn a great deal from the information in the scrapbook. There are many very old family letters as well as more recent memoribilia including a letter from 7 year old Catherine Moss to her grandmother about the loss of her tooth, to a short diary made by J.B. Moss on his European tour in 1873. There are hand painted botanicals, and numerous and charming old cards and illustrations. There is a finanical accounting of the J.B. Moss estate in his hand and also J.B. Moss's handwritten will in 1923. All the letters of acceptance or regret in respect to the marriage of Mary Word Leach to J.B. Moss to February 25th, 1891 are included. There are wedding invitations, calling cards, and fabric samples. There are very interesting articles on Mrs. Katherine Talbot Moss Edwards, J.B. Moss's "Aunt Kitty", who lived with the Moss's in her extreme old age. She died at 93 in 1894, having come to St. Joseph from Kentucky in 1844. She was an early poineer with stories to tell, many recounted in the newspaper clippings herein. Her daughter, Miss Isabel Boyd (Boyd was Mrs. Edward's first husband), was the first person to be buried at Mt. Mora Cemetary. She appears in early Moss home roof garden photographs.Context
