Road to Santa Fe is a detailed history of the Santa Fe Trail from its beginning at Old Franklin, MO to Santa Fe, New Mexico. It contains precisely detailed hand-drawn maps that have now been placed in the National Archives. Stocking has used journals of those beset by lack of water, Indian attack, imprisonment by Mexicans, and other hardships. As a scientist the author traveled the trail and noted the natural history, health conditions and many other details.
