Notes

The piece is from the French opera Le Cid (luh seed) based on a Spanish hero. It was written in 1637 and considered a tragicomedy about young lovers who are given approval to marry but their happiness is shattered when the bride’s father insults the groom’s father who then challenges him to a duel. However, the man is too old to duel and the son must defend his father's honor. The son ends up killing her father in the duel and she demands the king punish him for it. He ends up becoming a celebrated hero, leading the Spanish army against the Moors and earning the title “Le Cid” (The Lord). She finally forgives him and they end up together.
