General Notes

Note

Willard Seiberling (1892-1981) was an avid and accomplished photographer who developed his photographic interest while attending Princeton University between 1911-1915. The darkroom at Stan Hywet was added to the floorplan during construction for his use. Willard is credited with most of the early images of Stan Hywet. Willard was very interested in early aviation and balloon races were activities he participated in. According to oral history Willard met Orville and Wilbur Wright shortly after this first airplane flight at Kitty Hawk, and Willard was the first passenger aboard the first Goodyear blimp. After graduation from Princeton in 1915 Willard worked at Goodyear and was the manager of the company's Aeronautics Department. The glass plate negative collection at Stan Hywet contains images of blimps at the Wing Foot Lake facility, images taken by Willard Seiberling.
