RenumberDescription
Typewritten 10 page letter on Charles S. Schneider letterhead from Charles Schneider to F.A. Seiberling regarding updates on the house. He brings up again the door to Irene's bedroom explaining that he believes he has come up with a design to allow for the cross-ventilation Irene wants in her room that will be consistent with the general architecture of the Great Hall and he has included a blueprint. He describes the four wood panels that can be opened or closed individually as needed. Mr. Yellin will make the old English style grilles visible on the outside at a cost of $210. He is asking for approval to move forward. It had been previously discussed that the Infirmary needed only one light and one receptacle and Mr. Huber insisted more light was needed. They compromised on added four receptacles so lamps could be used if needed. Mr. Huber also wanted to make changes to lighting in the Plunge and the Housekeeper's room and those were added to the work to be done. He mentions a response regarding greenhouse work (unspecified details) and the fountain sketch by Miss Perry (Mary Chase Stratton) and she has been "ordered to further her sketches and drawings." He mentions having difficulties with King Construction Company who is to be working on the service building connected to the greenhouse. There was a disagreement on the scope of this work and when they provided drawings they were not to Schneider's standards. He mentions the service building which he boldly took the plan from the U-Bar Company's scheme. He says the gardens and lawns are looking fine and Dennis is doing good work. They have started laying the split stone walk on the upper west terrace. There is mention of having McAllister come back to finish up one more job due to miscommunication on who was to complete the window trim in the Enclosed porch. The implication is that they were not happy with McAllister's work but it would cost $300 - $400 for Hayden to finish the work instead. He goes on to mention how slow the work is going even though contracts were nearing their end dates and he's been trying to rush them. Yellin is making good progress and Schneider praised his work. Mr. Heinigke is also making good progress with the plain glass work and should be completed soon. The colored work is going very slowly though. He says the plastering is going very slowly and should finish the Music Room today then move on to the Ante Room (Round Room). The Hospital Room ceiling and walls are finished as is the stair tower ceiling. He is expecting Huber to send the woodwork for the Music Room next week. Woodwork for the Solarium has not arrived but the room is ready for it. Woodwork for the South Gallery is ready to ship but he has held it due to that being the main passage for the workmen so it will go up last. The woodwork for the private stairs and the Great Hall ceiling should be on its way. There is a handwritten note adding that the private stairs will be shipped Monday and the Great Hall ceiling in a week. He goes on to say that the Dining Room woodwork is almost ready to ship. Woodwork in the Billiard Room is done and is very fine. The office will be late due to the changes made. Woodwork in the North Gallery is done and the hall needs some paint touchup. Woodwork in both boys rooms is done and they are working on the Sleeping Porch now along with F.A.'s porch. The woodwork in room "G" is in place and he loves it. Irene's room woodwork is on the way. The Tower guest room nor Hospital Room are done.
He finishes the letter stating that he bought a car and specified it was to have Goodyear tires on it. It came in with U.S. Tires and he insisted they be changed. When he went to pick up the car it still had the U.S. Tires on it. He didn't want to take it but the family was waiting to go on an outing so I took it and hopes F.A. will forgive him. The best he could do was put a Goodyear on the rear and not cover it so it's free advertising. Signed in pen.Subject
