Dear Mr. Brucker:
Thank you for writing to me about your book on Landscape Painting by Carlson. Last winter I found time to give to a second scanning three various chapters, and found them more easily understood after my summer experiences in landscaping work. Mr Carlson’s long standing as one of our first artists, has given him authority to express ideas and information that no one could obtain unaided – But as well as the knowledge, he has the language and clearness of thinking which has enabled him to put on paper scientific and philosophical truths about “Art” that are very illuminating to a student – His book can well be used year after year for reference and study+ I am sorry to have held it so long in my possession, and to have deprived you of its use -; and I am embarrassed to have caused you anxiety, lest your book was lost – and not to be located; thru [sic] my having neglected to return it to you after a reasonable time for its perusal.
Thank you very much for what I have learned from it. Perhaps I shall have a book, or something in the art-line, which you [illegible] like to use sometime – I shall be glad to lend it to you –
I am very happy in the opportunity offered by the night classes for be disciplined [sic] in drawing – thru [sic] conscious concentrated observation, and thru [sic] controlled use of the hands in recording what the eye sees. Mr Keller has done much to teach the third dimension – color is much easier to obtain and apply than correct drawing – at least my eye for color is much keener – than for line in its relations to other lines –
With best wishes for the summer – and many opportunities to paint – Sincerely yours
Gertrude F. Seiberling
