Letter: Katherine Bruot to Gertrude SeiberlingEntry/Object ID
A 2025.12.b1.f10.4abDescription
[a] The writer starts by catching Gertrude up on all that has been happening in Vienna since she last wrote. She describes getting sick with the flu, needed to go to police court, and needing to move back into her previous hotel. She begins to explain her experience with the music lessons under composer Gustav Mahler (her purpose for being in Vienna?) and she mentions getting called out for being American. Sounds like it did not go well for the writer but she said she learned a lot of the lesson. She talks about the man leading the lessons and marvels about him. She talks about going to an opera with a Mr. and Mrs. Summers at the Embassy. She then describes the Embassy and the attendees. Ends the letter briefly for the night and then picks back up in the morning. She talks about her German lessons. She talks more about Mahlers. She talks about a party she attended with a conductor from Pittsburgh. She talks about prices of clothing. She mentions her brother and his marriage then mentions a Mr. Crousies (?) death. After ending the letter, on a separate smaller page she writes briefly about all the people she is studying with and their financial situations.
[b] The postage stamp and the ink stamp are both torn away. In the top left corner someone was doing the math of 3.50 plus 12.71 equals 16.21.Subject Person/Organization
