20 January 1938 Dear Gertrude— Thank you so much for the “Rising Tide.” It is a wonderful picture of what a religious Movement [sic] can do. I only wish one was Stricken [sic] world could see that a little Christianity would mean peace and nothing else does. You are dear to remember me at Christmas. I shall carry that picture of you + Frank surrounded by your children in my mind for many days with affection and congratulation, and not a little envy. Only – sometimes – I am glad that Jim did not have to face the Humledge [sic] of the ruin and disappointment that has [illegible] so many of his friends—was the appalling problem that have been interduced [sic] into our business and political world – It has been a hard time in which to keep sane – and in one way I am glad he was spared it – Im [sic] [illegible] how I miss his counsel, his [illegible], o his insight! My best love to you. I saw too little of you when I was in Akron. October needs eight weeks to do all one wants to do in it. I should have written sooner – but I picked up a nasty flu [illegible] + was in bed for two weeks before Christmas + had [illegible] pretty slow afterwards – Always lovingly + with many thanks Remember me to Frank Affectionally Laura
