Dear Family,-
A week ago tonight I started my last Family Letter of the old year, and shortly after midnight I ended my first F.L. of the New Year. Tonight brings to a close the first week of the New Year, and what a good beginning it has been. Bill, congratulations on your resolution to contribute your share of the letters from your family instead of letting Jeannie carry practically the entire load. Your first F.L. of the New Year started the year off right for me, as also did Jeannie’s personal letter to me, which could have been a Family Letter except for the personal paragraphs which made it a “Thank you” note. Following are the two paragraphs which could have been in a F.L:
“Our Christmas, as you can well appreciate, was almost an Utopian situation. We were all together as a family - and Bill and I were so aware of this rare occasion that both of us fought back tears of emotion on Christmas morning. In addition, we were so pleased that Mom and Dad could share this occasion with us, as Mom’s dreams of having a Christmas with all her grandchildren came true. Since Heavensworth [sic] is financially independent, each of them so generous - our living room looked like the first floor of Macy’s Dept. Store - each gift surpassing the previous one. The turkey was a tender one - the toasts, each one so meaningful, and it all added up to a Christmas celebration that I know none of us will ever forget. We are so grateful for each other’s love and attention - and as you know, there is nothing more wonderful in life than a close family - and I am grateful for all their love and attention to us and to each other.
“Heavensworth [sic] has been playing all Christmas vacation in Holland, Michigan at the Holiday Inn. We were disappointed to have them away the majority of Christmas, but their success and happiness in doing a good job there made us glow with happiness. They will be home January 1st, to play at a local Club here, and then will play for the big Kelly-Springfield dance on Jan. 7th. You can imagine our proudness of having them play for this event.”
Another thing that gave the New Year a good start for me was my call on Mom Michell. She told me all about their wonderful Christmas with all of their family together, and I could see that it was indeed a wonderful Christmas. She told me a lot about Shelley and Glenn, and about their parents in London.
Now regarding the last paragraph in Bill’s F.L: I talked with John on this and suggested we get bids from several local contractors as soon as the Shaws get up there early in June. John thought that he and Frank and maybe the Davis boys could handle the whole paint job, thereby saving considerable money. I pointed out that it built good-will to give work to the local contractors, and that we might let some contractor do the spraying job on the shingles, and after they were all through, and gone, the boys could do the brush job on the windows and doors. Two coats of the spraying were finished in less than a week back in 1967 or 68, so the work on the windows and doors could start by the third week in June if we can get the spraying started by the middle of June.
It is too bad the rest of you can’t read the personal letter Bill sent to me at the Blue Gables Motel which arrived the day I left, was forwarded to Akron, and then was sent back to Freeport by the Akron P.O. Bill enclosed it in his F.L. so that I received it about three weeks late. Bill had a “Cruise Control” installed on his car, and is so sold on it that he insists I must get one on my new Volare. He gave me the super sales-pitch by saying: “I will guarantee you complete satisfaction or I will refund your money.” Now I ask all of you, did you ever get a better deal than that? Bill, I’m glad you are so completely sold, and appreciate your interest in getting me sold. I’ll look into it.
Love to all,
