Note
Gertrude Ferguson Penfield Seiberling (1866-1946) studied art while attending the Lasell Seminary for Young Women in Auburndale, Massachusetts between 1883-1887. Later in life during the 1930's and 1940's, Mrs. Seiberling began to paint quite seriously, studying with well-known local artists, and exhibiting her work both locally and nationally. Mrs. Seiberling was also a prolific painter and there are many of her works in Stan Hywet's museum collection as well as in the possession of Seiberling family members. Mrs. Seiberling was a member of the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors as well as the Women's Art League of Akron. She entered the Butler Art Institute's yearly New Year Show, and in 1945 worked on an exhibition of 36 of her oil paintings to be displayed at the Akron Art Institute (Museum) where she was a trustee. Her unexpected death on January 8, 1946 transformed the March 1946 display into a memorial exhibition. After Mr. Seiberling's death in 1955, family members were permitted through a lottery system format to select and receive some of M/M Seiberling's possessions, including Gertrude's art. John Seiberling has already given some of her paintings to Stan Hywet Hall over the years, and this was given to the museum owing to John and Betty's decision to sell their home in the Cuyahoga valley and move into smaller quarters. In 2008, ICA recommended storing it lying flat to avoid further damage. Bruce Greer 11-9-2017
Further info (From Julie Frey email, 11-16-2017): "Red Barns in Snow" did come to ICA in 2008 for examination (ICA project 2800/08). However, no conservation treatment was done. Wendy Partridge calculated that the treatment-consolidation, cleaning, fills and retouching-would take almost 40 hours. She recalls that the cost estimated at that time, $4,300, was thought by Stan Hywet to be too much to invest in the painting, so the project was dropped before a treatment proposal was written.
Painting was sent to ICA in 2018 for conservation and was returned in March 2019. See Media links for documents and photographs.
