SHH 2008.813aDescription
A painting of a fountain in the Breakfast Room Garden during winter. The painting is an oil on canvas, which has been attached to a wooden stretcher frame with tacks. The stretcher frame is placed in a wooden frame (see SHH2008.813b) and held in place by two nails, one on the top of the painting and one at the bottom. A hanging wire is attached to the back of the painting through two small loops. The painting depicts approximately 3 inches of snow that has just fallen and covers the fountain, trees, and surrounding grounds. The fountain occupies the foreground center of the painting with a corner of Stan Hywet Hall positioned to the right of the fountain. The fountain is approximately 5 feet tall. The foundation of the fountain is an octagon shape, covered in snow. A cherub sits atop the fountain, which is supported by a column and a rectangular base. A vine is growing on the side of the house. The view is toward the Carriage House, which appears in the background with several trees. Shrubs/plants mark the edge of the sidewalk and around the fountain. A snow-covered red fire hydrant is seen in the lower left.Type of Painting

The general condition is fair. Overall, the painting appears dirty. The painting has some minor chipping with accompanying cracking on the lower quarter. Slight cracking throughout the painting, especially in the lower half. There is a slight "L" shaped tear center left (above rim of bird bath) approximately 1 1/2 inches long. A slight tear, approximately 1/4 inch, is in the center left of the painting. The back side of the canvas is dirty. The edges of the canvas where it has been attached to the frame are dry and brittle with some minor tears.General Notes
Note
Gifted to Stan Hywet by Dorothy Seiberling Stiber in 2008. Prior to the donation, the painting was on loan for the 2008 GPS painting exhibit. This painting was loaned to SHH for display in 2005.
Note - See SHH 91.525, which is a photograph taken of the painting in 1991 by J. Seiberling, Jr.
That photograph appears to show chips in the lower third of the painting, indicating that the chips were made previous to 1991.
Note - See SHH 2008.813b, which is the gold-painted wooden frame in which the painting was donated. The listed title of the painting, "Snow Patterns," was taken from a handwritten tag on the back of the frame. The writing is believed to be that of GPS. At the time of donation, Dorothy Seiberling Stiber was not sure of the title of the work.Note
