Description

Two blue and white glazed stoneware ashtrays. Each ashtray has "STORK CLUB" written on the side and includes a drawing of a stork in a top hat, the logo for New York City's Stork Club, in the bowl. The Stork Club opened in New York City in 1929, during the last years of Prohibition. They moved locations after being raided by agents of the Bureau of Prohibition, but they did not close. Over the almost 40 years that the club was open, it became a celebrity hub. Many movie and theater stars, politicians, and socialites spent time at the iconic nightclub. Reporters and photographers also gravitated to the club, and the visitors were frequently featured in various publications. Louis Bromfield's visits were mentioned in Walter Winchell's famous celebrity gossip column, and photographers captured pictures of him at the club with other celebrities. These stoneware ashtrays were made by John B. Taylor Pottery in Louisville Kentucky. In 1970, the pottery became Louisville Stoneware, and in 2007, it again changed name to Stoneware & Co.
