Twelve men gather around a distinctive rounded lunch counter that dominates the center of Parkhurst's Restaurant in Eureka, South Dakota, attended by two men in shirtsleeves and suspenders behind the counter. A sign on the back wall advertises Ham Sandwiches 5¢. Boxes and crates of food items, perhaps including fruit, occupy the left foreground. At right are several glass display cases, a scale, and a spittoon on the floor. Pastries or doughnuts appear inside one case, while another displays advertisements for chewing gum and Drum cigarettes. An oil or kerosene lamp hangs prominently from the center of the ceiling.
The photograph is related to a companion photograph of Tammen's Deutsche Apotheke (German Pharmacy) from the same Mehlhaff family collection in Eureka, South Dakota. A modern notation on the reverse identifies the establishment as "Parkhurst's Restaurant."
