Context

While undated, Churchill is depicted in this drawing as a weary and drained wartime leader. He is shown in a suit and his trademark polka dot bow-tie from Turnbull & Asser*. His white polka dot on navy blue silk twill bow-tie came to be known as the “Blenheim,” which is the name of the Churchill family seat. The bow-tie was also a reminder of his father, with whom Winston had had a difficult relationship. Lord Randolph Churchill had also worn a bow-tie. * The London Royal Warrant shirtmaker Turnbull & Asser was established in 1885, and has been supplying men's wear to illustrious figures both real and fictional over its history, from Sir Winston Churchill to James Bond.
