Context

This reproduction is of the Club, 912 Douglas Street with the major addition to the right, ca. 1902 (northwest corner of Douglas at Rae Street, later Courtney Street), Victoria, B.C. This elegant three-story building was the second venue for the Club, and was in operation from 1885 to 1913. After default of taxes, the city took over ownership of the building that was later converted for use as a servicemen's hostel in WWII and later the Veterans of France headquarters. It was razed in 1950. See Susan Mayse, "The Union Club of British Columbia - Our First 125 Years" (Victoria, B.C.: The Union Club of British Columbia, 2004), and Paul L. Bissley, "Early and Late Victorians: A History of the Union Club of British Columbia" (Sidney, B.C.: Review Printing and Publishing Co. Ltd., 1969). Both publications are available in the UCBC Library.
