Painting
This charming, and perhaps 'naive', country landscape with figures is a bucolic view of a cornfield through a treed pathway from a foreground with a stream, people and various animals. A young boy drinking from the stream to the left, is perhaps the shepherd for the nearby flock of sheep with a dog.Context
The artist's reference to "Constable" in her painting's title is to John Constable RA (1776- 1837), the famous English landscape painter in the Romantic tradition. Born in Suffolk, he was largely responsible for reviving and revolutionizing the genre of landscape painting in the 19th century with his pictures of the area surrounding his home, known as "Constable Country", which he invested with an intensely personal vision.
Of note, while most landscape painters of the day traveled extensively in search of picturesque or sublime scenery, Constable never left England.Made/Created
