Painting
This marine landscape depicts a view from the shore in an eerie light likely from Beach Drive in the north across Enterprise Channel to the barren Trial Islands, a group of two plus islands located off the south-eastern tip of Vancouver Island off Victoria, part of the municipality of Oak Bay in Greater Victoria. The Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges in the U.S. Washington state are visible in the distance. Together, the islands form the Trial Islands Ecological Reserve and access outside of designated zones is prohibited.Type of Painting

The Trial Islands sit just south of Vancouver Island, at the junction of the Juan de Fuca and Haro Straits in the Salish Sea. The major Trial Island is home to the Trial Islands Lighthouse, built at Staines Point on the southeast corner of the island in 1970 to replace the original lighthouse erected in 1906, and operated by the Canadian Coast Guard. The lighthouse was designated as a heritage lighthouse on May 29, 2015 because of its historical, architectural, and community values. The island is also home to four large radio antennas.
The prevailing theory is that Trial Island got its name from the practice of sending British naval ships for a trial run out to the island and back after they were refitted at Esquimalt Harbour.Made/Created
