ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Born in Sheffield, England, Arthur Gresham was a Canadian artist known for his still lifes and portraits in oil and watercolour. In 1911, he immigrated to Canada and studied at the Ontario College of Art, Toronto. He painted Ontario scenes and later Vancouver Island and Western Canada scenes. He also worked in still life and portraiture. Gresham did sketching trips with members of the famed Canadian Group of Seven and was art director for Eaton's of Canada from 1920 to 1934, as well as a commercial artist in his own Gresham Studios.
Gresham was a member of the Canadian Society of Graphic Artists and the Ontario Society of Artists, as well as serving on their board. He exhibited widely including at the National Gallery of Canada, and with the Royal Canadian Academy for 30 years from 1923. He moved to Victoria in the early 1960s. His work can be found in the collections of the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria as well as numerous private collections.
